WHY

  The only thread through every memory, nothing more than a single word untold. Whispered by my mind, seeking answers the heart cannot hold. I ask myself, was it everything I asked for? Or merely a wish dressed as fate? Or was it a lesson sent by time, that my soul has learned to hate? No, I never asked for it, yet was given a taste of it. Bitter, yet I craved it still, and wondered, why I could not let it slip. I'll carry it with me as a chapter, a page I never meant to write. You drape around my shoulders, warm and sure, A borrowed hush against the brittle air; In every thread, I feel my heart endure The ache of wanting more than I can bear. You hold me when the world is sharp and loud, Your weight a promise stitched into my skin; I hide my shaking where I’m not so proud, Pretend this closeness is not pulling me in. I crave the way you know me without touch, The silent care you never have to prove; I fear I want your comfort far too much, Mistaking shelter for a deeper love. If I should lose you, cold would know my name For warmth like yours is never quite the same.

HE ISN'T YOU

He says my name,  but it doesn't land the same. His hands are warm,   yet they don't know my shape. He listens, yes but not to the pauses between my words. Being with him feels like daylight, while you were the moon I learned to ache for. I smile, I try, I almost believe, but my heart keeps looking for your shadow. He gives me moments,  you were the meaning inside them. And that's how I know he isn't you, and never will be.
